From Sumatra to the Cup, Part 2: The Relay of Sorting, Shipping and Roasting

The second Farm to Cup story follows dry milling, export, quality inspections and roasting to document the latter half of Sumatran coffee’s journey to stores.

People and Equipment Work Together to Safeguard Quality

At the dry mill, impurities are removed through a six-stage process, and the beans are sorted by size, density and color before a final manual inspection. Green coffee beans that pass inspection are packed into 60-kilogram burlap sacks and shipped by sea to roasting facilities after multiple rounds of quality verification.

Baristas Complete the Final Stage

The roasting team adjusts heat and time to account for differences among green coffee beans, then checks for foreign matter again after packaging. Through brewing and conversation, store partners turn the work of producers and processors into a cup of coffee that customers can experience.
