Visiting Wahana Estate: The Producers Behind the 30th Anniversary Sumatra Coffee

Starbucks Japan’s official website visits Wahana Estate, located at an elevation of approximately 1,200 meters and home to around 250 families, documenting its producers, processing methods, and long-term collaboration.

Bringing Quality Control to the Source

The estate purchases fresh coffee cherries and processes them centrally to improve quality consistency. The 30th anniversary coffee uses washed and natural processing methods, which are relatively uncommon locally, while the estate also uses covered drying facilities to adapt to changes in rainfall.

A Relationship of Growing Together

The article explains that the estate gives priority to providing new seedlings to nearby smallholder farmers and describes how Starbucks’ agronomic support helps with shade trees, pruning, and pest and disease management, illustrating the long-term connections among people and families throughout the supply chain.
